The Island

2005, Parkes/MacDonald Productions

Slightly less Michael Bay-ish than most of his other nonsense, The Island attempts to be intelligent, but is instead a derivative mess, a mashup of THX 1138, Coma and Logan's Run: yet another seemingly utopian society of the future has a sinister secret. Acting and effects are good enough that you won't feel as though you've wasted 136 minutes of your life, but it's not something to go out of your way to see. It barely broke even at the box office; however, another filmmaker sued the studio for copyright infringement, and the out-of-court settlement ran seven digits, so it was probably a net loss.
