With the smash success of District 9 (which cost a mere $30 million), Neill Blomkamp was suddenly the wunderkind of Hollywood, and soon found himself at the helm of a $115 million blockbuster with A-list stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Unfortunately, Elysium was all sizzle and no steak: a paper-thin story with flat, juvenile dialog and state-of-the-art window-dressing. Admitting his guilt and embarrassment for the failure, Blomkamp dialed back his ambition to pursue his more modest $50 million Chappie, with only marginally better success.
