District 9

2009, QED International et al

With its convincing documentary style and startlingly well-done effects, District 9 became a surprise hit—and also ignited a political firestorm in Nigeria. All because Peter Jackson gambled on Neill Blomkamp. In particular, the film's dialog feels spontaneous and real, and that's because most of it was ad-libbed—much of the script simply contained general descriptions of the characters' interactions. On the negative side, it does get excessively violent on occasion, and the ending is less than satisfying. Thanks to its success, Blomkamp had Hollywood's undivided attention almost overnight; unfortunately, he failed to repeat his success with Elysium.
