Chappie

2015, Media Rights Capital et al

The third film from South African director Neill Blomkamp (best known for the surprise hit District 9), Chappie is neither original nor enjoyable, and can perhaps best be summarized as a ghetto version of Short Circuit. Despite its unoriginality, it could have been much better had the title character not been perpetually foul-mouthed. I suspect Blomkamp meant for this to be a kind of running gag, but it was old within a minute; by the end of the film, it had become unbearably obnoxious. Chappie's only appeal might be the seamless visual effects, so perhaps watch it with the sound muted. Should have been called Crappie.
