The Flash

2014-, Bonanza Productions et al

I'd never imagined myself enjoying superhero TV shows, but here I am, and I blame it all on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Just as Clark Gregg is the draw for that series, Grant Gustin is the reason to see The Flash. He's an eternally optimistic, enthusiastic, earnest nerd who brings you back for each new episode. The series' premise is quite absurd, often borderline laughable, but that's part of the charm. It does have its weaknesses, most notably the underwhelming Candice Patton as Barry's love interest. But other co-stars pick up the slack, particularly Jesse L. Martin as Barry's adoptive father, and Tom Cavanagh as an all-purpose pro/antagonist who always keeps you guessing. Production values are high, and in particular the scriptwriting and editing maintain a good pace, even if some episodes don't measure up. Alas, the series got progressively more absurd with each season, and I stopped watching after the fourth. As of 2022, the show is still running.
