Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

2013-2020, ABC Studios et al

I'm not exactly sure what drew me to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I have a feeling it was probably a clip featuring Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson. With his laid-back, disarming charisma, he's really the engine of this show; his wry sense of humor emerges unexpectedly, and he'll put a self-aware spin on absurd events, which are frequent. That he's surrounded by a varied and colorful ensemble makes a good thing better; in particular, Daisy and Coulson share a special relationship. Roll everything into a silly but well-crafted, self-contained universe where anything can happen, often with rapid-fire plot twists, and you've got endless possibilities for fun.

Some of the first season episodes were a little rough around the edges, but you've got to give a show at least a season to find its sea legs. By the third season, the series earned a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that's no mean feat.

Having drunk the Kool-Aid, I hung in there for all seven seasons, and alas things started to get really shaky in Season 6. Their foray into space was embarrassing, they began inventing all manner of ways to bring Coulson back to life, and Deke was a truly annoying character. Season 7 was somewhat improved, and the final episode tugged on the right heartstrings, so it was still worth the time.
