Ne Zha2019, Coloroom Pictures et al Prequel to Jiang Ziya, this adaptation of a popular Chinese novel from the time of the Ming Dynasty, Investiture of the Gods by Xu Zhonglin, presents the mythology of the fictional titular character. Although the animation is reasonably well done, the style and tone might be off-putting to some Western viewers: broad, juvenile humor (complete with fart jokes), loads of manga-esque frenetic action and violence, and an unlikeable little brat for a hero. Remarkably, Ne Zha became the highest-grossing non-U.S. animated film, and the second highest-grossing non-English-language film of any genre to date. It's been followed by Nezha Reborn.
