Corpse Bride

2005, Tim Burton Productions/Laika Entertainment

Although it was generally well received, this follow-up to The Nightmare Before Christmas failed to ignite the same spark for me. The convoluted story felt contrived, the Burton-esque characters seemed a bit overwrought, and overall the film wasn't as fresh and creative as its predecessor. That's not to say it's not enjoyable; one can spend a considerable amount of time admiring the care and craftsmanship that went into its production. Not to mention the technology involved: the characters' golf ball-sized heads contained tiny motors and gears to control some of their movements. But the sum of its parts simply fell short.
