The Nightmare Before Christmas

1993, Touchstone Pictures/Skellington Productions

Tim Burton could be credited for a renewed interest in stop motion animation, at least to some extent; certainly he was possibly one of the first to bring the technique to the big screen as a modern mainstream release. That said, Burton was more of an "ideas man," and was hardly involved in the production process.

Regardless, at the end of the day Nightmare was a phenomenal success that still holds up well over a decade later. The combination of copious creativity, groundbreaking technology, and top-notch production values resulted in a certifiable hit that's also given rise to a raft of similar films to come.
