Pine Creek Railroad in Z Scale

The Shay, Part 3: The Cylinders

Now we start getting into the meat of a Shay. Compared to the crankcase—which, surprisingly, was harder than the crankshaft—this would be a breeze: all made from bits of tubing, sheet stock and wire. The only tricky parts would be the piston connecting rods, which were the only moving parts.

Easier said than done. Look at the real thing: there are dozens of parts to make. Naturally I wasn't about to model every part, but the major ones were still vast in number, and each part comprised several pieces.

This page will be updated as the project progresses.
