Grump Central Archive: Week of 27 October 2019

Bonus grumpiness round. Yesterday was spent getting my insides tied into knots as I dealt with yet more headaches from the County Health Department. Now they want new permeability tests done on the fill material used in the disposal field. The material was originally tested during construction, yet for reasons known only to the County, they wanted two new ones—on a system for which they'd already given their final approval over four years ago! All of which of course is going to cost me even more time and money, not to mention emotional health—I've barely begun to address this latest round of "nonsense" (I'm being very polite here) and I'm emotionally exhausted already. And naturally, as has happened countless times before, I received the bad news on a Friday, so that I'd get to stew helplessly all weekend. The bastards are doing their damndest to grind me down. Is it any wonder why I drink a lot, have almost no hair left, and suffer from chronic depression? And also loathe bureaucrats, lawyers and Fridays?

If there's any good news at this point, it's that the County finally, finally, finally gave their Official Blessing on my well water—all thanks to the septic engineer, who ensured the Health Department received and acknowledged the water test report dated 2 July 2019 (of which they'd previously lost no less than three copies). Score one for the home team.

Thanks to days upon days of wind and rain, autumn is looking depressingly drab. Normally the first week of November is the best of the season, but not this year. So much for enjoying the show from my home for the first time. Oh, it hit 74° yesterday afternoon, and it's supposed to drop below freezing tonight. Welcome back to the wacky weather channel.

Thursday, 31 October 2019

The weather has been miserable for days, and it perfectly reflects how I've been feeling. I've been trying to distract myself by preparing for my forthcoming Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm easing up a little on my drive to get the kitties in the house for a couple of reasons. One, I'm right on the cusp of getting my long-awaited TCO, which I'd prefer to have on hand before I move my kids in; and two, things are going slower than I'd prefer, which is not unexpected (mostly due to the fact that I'm still having a great deal of difficulty getting my act together). But I still want them in ASAP, as I've got another social event scheduled for Thanksgiving, and I'd like them acclimated to the house before I have any more guests.

As I continue my efforts to get my kitties into the house, I'm still enjoying the afterglow of a great weekend. It's nice to know this asocial old grump can successfully entertain—those big smiles are all genuine. Meanwhile, as I scan the latest headlines, I'm forced to question my desire to remain "informed" when so much of the news these days is so deeply disturbing. Yes, I can discuss topics intelligently with friends, but so what? When current events trigger depression (the trend is widespread, according to mental health professionals), what's the point? Worse, it's not just us Americans who are suffering—a friend in the UK relates how Brexit as affecting their heads as well. Is there no escape?

Monday, 28 October 2019

This week marks my push to get the kitties into the house. It starts with spackling their room, followed by general cleaning and doing as much as I can on certain other projects to make a house that's very much still under construction a little more kitty friendly.

Just re-emerging from the event now, and a smashing good time was had by all.
