Grump Central Archive: Week of 4 November 2018

Saturday, 10 November 2018

After (mentally) biting my nails to the quick, I was surprised by a rough electrical inspection that was even shorter than the one for rough plumbing—if he was here more than two minutes, I'd be surprised. But the one I dreaded most was saved for last: framing. And as it happens, I flunked. All minor picky little stuff, but it still represents a few days of work and another inspection. Worse, today's predicted sunshine will be followed by our first below-freezing night. I hope these are rare, as I may need to do some excavation early December in order to connect the well to the house. Otherwise, that will need to wait until Spring. Meanwhile, my body is feeling all of the intense activity—as well as the stress—in a major way. I may need to let things lapse until next year if only to avoid a physical breakdown.

One inspection down, two to go. I hope I'll survive the stress—this sort of thing is a killer for me, especially considering it's supposed to pour rain today, and the framing inspector will get to see the unfinished roof leaking. I was up since 1 AM, and was at work on the house by 5 AM—now that I have electricity, I can use work lights!

Now the butterflies start. Although I'm reasonably sure my work should pass all of the inspections, nothing in life is certain; you can't predict what quirks inspectors have about certain details. So sleep is fitful at best and bound to get worse before the week is out.

With permits in hand and inspections scheduled—three this week!—I'm frantically gearing up for the steps to come, which include windows, doors and insulation. And somewhere along the line I should be getting a roof, but the weather has been too flaky to know exactly when that will happen.

With two-plus days of heavy rain in the forecast, I'm working indoors—between coughing fits, that is. However, it's worth noting that progress has been slowed significantly by the Township. Although they're doing their best to keep up with permits and inspections, there have been delays at nearly every turn, some of which have held up key steps by weeks. Weather and health are only part of the problem.

Monday, 5 November 2018

I've been desperate to accomplish things whenever I can since the clock is ticking, but despite brief bits of nice weather, I haven't gotten much done mostly because I've been crippled by violent, debilitating coughing fits—a consequence Sarcoid triggered by flu, as to be expected.

Sunday, 4 November 2018

It's supposed to be nice today, then return to liquid sunshine for the next three days. I'm beginning to wonder if nature will ever allow me to put a roof on the house.
