With Steven Spielberg's much-hyped attachment to the project, expectations were sky high. But while it got off to a promising start, it slowly began living up to its title, finally crashing to an end in a troubled fifth season. Its obvious War of the Worlds premise was given a new coat of paint, a healthy budget, a decent cast, and sent off to battle. Vacillating between preachy allegory and straightforward shoot-em-up, it was too often punctuated by a pithy speech by former history teacher and reluctant resistance leader Tom Mason, played with indefatigable conviction by Noah Wyle.
