Space Precinct

1994-1995, Gerry Anderson Productions et al

Gerry Anderson's science fiction police procedural grew out of his efforts to launch a series in 1988 entitled Space Police. It's really tough to get a bead on what the show is trying to be: too silly to be a drama, too serious to be a comedy, and too dumb to be a spoof, it ultimately comes off as a kiddy show for dads. The stories are juvenile, the acting is appalling, and effects are bad even by the standards of the day. Although somewhat popular in Britain, ultimately the show was doomed by clueless American broadcasters who slotted the show late at night. Although the 24 episodes are pretty painful to watch, the imaginative animatronic heads created for the alien characters are quite fascinating—assuming practical effects of this kind are of interest.
