Max Headroom

1987-1988, Chrysalis Visual Programming et al

This woefully misunderstood, sadly underrated series—adapted from a significantly different British variety show—created a brief fad that put Matt Frewer on the map as the title character, a digital alter ego of a TV news reporter. The premise was slightly ahead of its time, and might find more acceptance today: its technology would be better understood, and its biting satire would find much riper targets. The loser in a ratings battle—ironic, given this was the show's primary target—Max was cancelled after two abbreviated seasons. In truth, as much as I enjoyed the show, I found 14 episodes to be enough, as Max was beginning to wear thin.
