Defying Gravity

2009, Parriott/Edelstein Productions et al

It is perhaps appropriate that a multi-national production portrays a multi-national space project: basically a manned "grand tour" of the solar system. Planned as a three-year series, it was cancelled after only one, with barely enough time to create a final episode. With four men and four women locked in a space ship for years, it had the potential to be quite literally a soap opera in space, yet the stories were anything but soapy. Good performances and high production values made it worthwhile to watch, especially given its adherence to good science—the landing on Venus was handled exceptionally well. The finale, however, is rushed, which only reinforces my disappointment the series wasn't able to complete its mission as originally planned.
