Defiance

2013-2015, Five & Dime Productions et al

Although it gets off to a slow start, this wild-west/post-apocalyptic-wasteland hybrid steadily grows on the patient viewer. In an intriguing twist on the alien invasion trope, multiple alien races co-occupy Earth, offering richly diverse cultural exploration that sometimes manifests itself in highly creative ways, like pop tune covers done in alien languages, as well as three- and four-way conflicts. But perhaps most rewarding is our hero's relationship with his adopted alien daughter; occasionally their struggle is all too real, to the point of being achingly sad. The effects aren't always the best, but they're not the reason to watch. Regrettably, the show was cancelled after only three seasons due to financial issues, despite critical praise.
