Continuum

2012-2015, Reunion Pictures et al

Some decent special effects help introduce a premise that, on the surface, seems too derivative to be of much interest. But a season or maybe two into the series, things begin to turn around, particularly as we become more familiar with the main characters. Rachel Nichols gets much of the credit for the slow build-up of interest, as her performance grows more nuanced. Likewise, Victor Webster as a present-day policeman slowly transforms from stereotypical no-nonsense street cop to a more invested player. It's good that the show was allowed to develop; had it ended after its first or second season, we probably wouldn't have cared. Having said that, even though the show's creator Simon Barry had planned on a run of 7-10 seasons, I wonder if it could have sustained interest much past its four-year stint; it ended on a strong note, which is more than can be said for many other shows.
