Science historian James Burke presents an utterly fascinating "alternate view" of how significant inventions came to be. He demonstrates that the development of any single aspect of technology cannot be expressed in isolation; rather, it's the interaction of many diverse, unrelated events that lead to the outcome. The opening episode, for example, argues that the invention of the plough in ancient Egypt is responsible for the whole of our current technology-dependent civilization.
