The Blue Umbrella

The stars were in alignment for director Saschka Unseld when he embarked on this brilliantly creative seven-minute short. In addition to a heartwarming love story, Umbrella features spectacular groundbreaking animation. Some shots are well and truly indistinguishable from reality; in particular, the crowds and traffic are simply stunning. It shares a three-way tie with Bao and Piper for second place behind my all-time favorite Paperman.
