Bao

2018, Walt Disney/Pixar

If you yearn for more of Pixar's renowned quality and originality, look no further than Academy Award winner Bao, written and directed by Domee Shi. This tender, deeply moving allegorical tale of childrearing, separation and reconciliation is told in the context of a traditional Chinese dish, baozi. Sweet without being saccharine, it's also at times heartbreaking, and the character design is refreshingly unique. Bao shares a three-way tie with The Blue Umbrella and Piper for second place behind my all-time favorite Paperman. As icing on a perfect cake, there's a must-see making-of bonus doc in the Walt Disney Short Film Collection.
