Madame Tutli-Putli

2007, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski

This stop-motion film from Montreal is at once visually fascinating and downright creepy: the animators superimposed actual eyes over the doll faces for a surreal effect, although technically the animation is nearly flawless. Following a woman taking a train to who-knows-where, this is one of those shorts having an ambiguous, unresolved ending, which might disappoint some viewers. In spite of my quibbles, this would have been my choice for best animated short, rather than Peter and the Wolf.
