Dances with Wolves

1990, Tig Productions et al

After seeing it for the first time, it was quite a long while before I could watch it again, for the film reduced me to a sobbing mess. I ached for the plight of the Native American, for I had a strong sense that the ugly things portrayed in the film were accurate in spirit, if not in fact. Mary McDonnell was jaw-dropping in her performance as Stands With A Fist. Dances with Wolves earned twelve Academy Award nominations and won seven. Some Native Americans took issue with the language used in the film; others moved past this trivial quibbling and embraced the film's spirit—the Sioux Nation adopted Costner as an honorary member.
