Harrison Ford earned his one and only Academy Award nomination with his turn as a New York City cop in this uneven crime thriller; mixing a brief, tender love affair with a strange gun battle set in the Amish country was awkward at best. Ford did get a chance to flex his real-life woodworking skills, but the Amish community in which much of the film was shot threw a fit over their portrayal; after threats from lawyers representing the Amish, Pennsylvania governor Dick Thornburgh agreed not to promote their communities for film productions. Still, it was a critical and commercial success, earning eight Academy Award nominations, winning two, for what that's worth. Maurice Jarre's score was almost surreal.
