With Ron Howard helming a George Lucas fantasy story, it seems like a slam-dunk. But Howard tends to lose his way, allowing effects to replace good storytelling. It's still worth a look, however, if only as a lesson in what can go wrong with something that should have gone right. A modest box office success, it has since become a cult favorite.
