Watchmen

2009, Warner Brothers/Paramount

Perhaps the ultimate anti-superhero superhero film, Watchmen was highly anticipated by the comic's fans, apparently. The end result can perhaps be summarized as a success that failed due to its own excesses. At times genuinely intriguing, at others bloated and self-serving, it struggled mightily under the crushing weight of its overabundant source material. Fans and critics were both sharply divided, and the film barely broke even at the box office. For me, Watchmen is at least fairly entertaining, at its best when Jackie Earle Haley is on the screen: Rorschach helpfully delivers succinct, insightful observations on the story's overcomplicated proceedings.
