Big Trouble in Little China

A rare non-horror outing for John Carpenter, Big Trouble was a disaster both at the box office and with critics, but has since acquired a cult following, in a way vindicating Carpenter's feeling it was a good film. Small on story but big on offbeat humor, it's definitely politically incorrect in a present-day setting. Carpenter wanted Clint Eastwood for the lead, but he was busy, so Kurt Russel did something of an Eastwood impersonation that adds to the film's charm. If some of its quirkiness may seem vaguely familiar, it's because co-writer W.D. Richter also penned The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai.
