Titus

2000, Clear Blue Sky Productions et al

First-time director Julie Taymor's adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Titus Andronicus had so much going for it: a wonderfully creative script (written by Taymor) and a to-die-for cast, including Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange, to bring it to life. But it was a box office bomb, earning less than 10% of its cost. And likely the reason is that it's too intelligent and literate for average moviegoers. The DVD release is even more extraordinary, providing numerous insightful and thought-provoking docs. Clearly a labor of love, and one that deserves much better.
