The Time Machine

1960, MGM—British studio

Although terribly dated by today's standards, this nostalgic film is still highly enjoyable thanks to its earnest performances and warm, innocent charm. Producer/director George Pal employed his time-honored magic tricks to imbue the fanciful tale with equally fanciful and memorable visuals.

The Time Machine

2002, Parkes/MacDonald

My love of the original admittedly made me prejudiced against a remake, unless it was spectacular. Alas, it was pretty forgettable, with our hero transformed from an intellectual into an adventurer who manages at one point to land in the year 635,427,810. Nice effects make all of the silliness a little easier to swallow.
