Things to Come

1936, London Film Productions

Things to Come joins the ranks of Metropolis as a seminal masterwork (although H.G. Wells is said to have hated Fritz Lang's film). The story progresses from 1940 to 1966, 1970 and finally 2036, and while the depictions of the future are understandably faulty, they're not embarrassing, either. The film's budget—equivalent to $350,000—was astounding for its day, although it did not perform well enough to earn back the investment.
