In a making-of documentary, Roman Polanski confessed that he had no clue how to assemble the film after having shot a hundred times more footage than was needed, one of many tragedies that befell this production. His wife recommended the idea to him, and shortly afterward she was murdered by the Manson family; the film is dedicated to her. Partway into production, his cinematographer died of a heart attack. And Polanski was a fugitive, wanted by American authorities for having sex with an underage girl. Yet the resulting film, one of Polanski's rare love stories, was widely acclaimed. Nastassja Kinski is heartbreaking in the title role, and Philippe Sarde's score is remarkable.
