Suicide Squad

2016, DC Entertainment et al

I often wonder, when watching a not-so-great film, how does it slip past so many eyeballs without getting caught? Do they use drugs or cash to keep the project running right up to its release? Suicide Squad was panned mercilessly, and I can fully appreciate why: the only thing going for it was the CGI, and even that was a little shaky on occasion, while the ordinarily entertaining Will Smith sent his performance in by text. But then I learned it raked in three quarters of a billion dollars at the box office, and I had to begrudgingly acknowledge the wisdom of the filmmakers: throw enough stars, comic characters and effects at the screen, and something is bound to stick.

The Suicide Squad

2021, DC Films et al

Given his major success with Guardians of the Galaxy, I had high hopes for James Gunn's take on Suicide Squad. While structurally better, alas it's a 300-esque celebration of bloody violence. Gunn tried to pass it off as a form of humor... honestly, I never even grinned; instead, I grimaced. I'm beginning to think this franchise is cursed, not unlike Fantastic Four.
