Stargate

1994, StudioCanal et al

While generally panned by critics, Roland Emmerich's Stargate became something of a sleeper hit that eventually spawned a sprawling television franchise. At times original and at others eye-rolling, it has a kind of 1970s naïve charm, with Kurt Russell's B-movie enthusiasm, loopy plot and feel-good ending. Plus, Jaye Davidson as the androgynous sun-god Ra is the definition of over-the-top-ness. Semi-decent brainless popcorn fare.
