Snowpiercer

2013, Moho Film et al

Okay, so I understand the appeal (to a degree) of adapting comics, graphic novels and manga to film. But why go to the expense, when the author(s) of the source material clearly must have been high when they conceived their work? I mean, come on, a train that circles the whole Earth continuously during a future manmade ice age? I want to know what Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette were smoking, so I can avoid it.

And then we have the film, which was produced in Korea: excellent production value, script, performances, direction, effects—all in service of a plot device so utterly absurd it's laughable. Critics were falling all over themselves lavishing the film with praise—honestly, I think they were high on the same stuff as the authors. I'm sorry, I simply did not have sufficient willpower to suspend my disbelief for the premise to work, although I will say that Tilda Swinton was exceptional—in fact, she saved it from being an SBD. (Incidentally, I had the same problem with Mortal Engines, although that film crashed and burned.)

And to think Snowpiercer spawned a television series to boot...
