Liquid Sky

1982, Cinevista et al

Documentary filmmaker Slava Tsukerman took a stab at something very different, and Liquid Sky is nothing if not different. It was recommended to me by a colleague at the time; after about fifteen minutes, I ejected the tape and returned it. The colleague urged me to give it a second chance, and I did. Thankfully. While it's challenging to watch on occasion—mostly due to a painfully dissonant electronic score—it rewards the viewer with something so absurd that it's nearly irresistible, albeit maddeningly difficult to articulate. If you have a taste for the highly unusual, and aren't put off by harsh music or bizarre, sexually charged themes, this may be for you.
