Silent Running

1972, Universal Pictures

Long a favorite of mine, Silent Running is not without considerable flaws, but also not without considerable worthiness. While its simplistic environmental message is about as subtle as a Mack truck, it offers a surprisingly believable glimpse of space travel, particularly for its day. And a simple story is not automatically bad. Bruce Dern offers a sensitive turn as a tree-hugger on a mission, and I've always loved how Dewey, Huey and Louie can win hearts without a word—or even a face.
