Why do I get the feeling someone at DreamWorks threw something together just so they could use Will Smith as a headliner? The results simply do not work, despite a gaggle of other A-listers including Robert DeNiro, Renée Zellweger, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, and Martin Scorsese. The story is at best perfunctory, the dialog overly-reliant on unfunny pop culture gags, and even the animation looks second-rate, particularly the awkward character design. But that didn't stop Will Smith fans from showing up in droves and buying over $350 million in tickets. Not to mention it was nominated for a best animated feature Academy Award! Man, what are those folks at the Academy smoking?
