The Shape of Water

2017, TSG Entertainment et al

Without question, this is Guillermo del Toro's masterwork. Not that I put much faith in the Academy, it's worth noting that it got thirteen nominations and won four, including best picture, director, score and production design. Many critics hailed it as his best work since Pan's Labyrinth in 2006, although I think Pan paled by comparison. After watching it the first time, I immediately watched it again; there are scenes that are simply magical, and Sally Hawkins is a knockout (she received a best actress nod).

"A fairy tale for troubled times" indeed!
