Tim Burton was near the peak of his career when he wrote and filmed this original fantasy tale. Although the visual style threatens to overwhelm the senses, and Danny Elfman's score is a bit too saccharine, Johnny Depp's deeply introspective performance carries the film through to a satisfying conclusion.
