RED

2010, DC Entertainment et al

Not being a comic fan, I took a big chance with this one, and I'm glad I did. What it may lack in substance (which isn't much), it makes up for in style and, most especially, the appeal of a very appealing cast, which incidentally includes Karl Urban (a.k.a. Bones in the Star Trek reboot). If you enjoy yarns about old retired spies returning to action and shooting as many witticisms as bullets, then this one is for you; Mary-Louise Parker being gagged and kidnapped by Bruce Willis is worth the price of admission.

RED 2

2010, Di Bonaventura Pictures

Despite having the same powerhouse cast (all of whom seemed to be having a great deal of fun), the same snappy action, the same tongue-in-cheek wit, and the same cool scene transitions, the sequel is missing something... like maybe a well-structured story. But it's still worth 116 minutes of your time—assuming this sort of film appeals to you. I confess, sheepishly, the first one remains a guilty pleasure for me.
