Ready Player One

2018, Amblin Entertainment et al

Occasionally Steven Spielberg makes a great film; when he doesn't, he seems to have his psyche overtaken by James Cameron. Cardboard cutout characters populate an eye-searing Technicolor CGI universe, with frenetic action that can only be followed by hardcore video game players. This time, the not-especially-original premise is that people of the near future get addicted to and lost inside video games, which provides Spielberg an excuse to deliver an endless barrage of early technology cultural references and period trivia, much of which was surely lost on the film's presumed target demographic. Well-received by critics, Ready had no impact on me, save for an eyestrain headache induced by the overwrought CGI.
