Five Million Years to Earth

1957, Hammer Film Productions et al

Although billed as a horror film, this is more science fiction, and is also distinguished by being regarded as Hammer's best. Based on a BBC Television serial Quatermass and the Pit (which was the film's UK title), it was the third in a quadrilogy, although the fourth was a patchwork of television episodes rather than a proper film. Competently produced, decently acted and quite well written, it has some genuinely chilling moments, although the climatic effects will elicit chuckles as opposed to gasps from today's audiences. It's quite fun spotting familiar British actors.
