The Princess Bride

1987, Buttercup Films et al

Here's a tough one to categorize: is it a comedy-fantasy film, or a fantasy-comedy film? I went with the latter because it seemed to take the fantasy element just a teensy bit more seriously, but cleverly painting it with a comic patina that's irresistibly charming. For me it's the most successful marriage of fantasy and humor to come along since—well, I can't rightly say. And while there have been a number of copycats, none have achieved the level of devotion that Princess Bride has earned; our limp hero being dragged along like a rag doll is but one of countless memorable scenes in this priceless gem of a film. Rob Reiner knew exactly what he was doing.
