The Polar Express

2004, Castle Rock Entertainment et al

Robert Zemeckis was so enamored of (brand new at the time) motion capture technology that his budget ballooned into the largest ever for an animated feature to date. Unfortunately, even $165 million can't buy success—as has been proven time and again in the motion picture industry—nor can an A-lister (Tom Hanks) playing six parts! The result of this misguided effort was a bloated mass of visual effects starring a raft of dead-eyed zombies. Children are much less discriminating, which probably explains why the film still raked in over $300 million.
