The Peanuts Movie

2015, Blue Sky Studios

Being a lifelong admirer of Charles Schulz, and having practically gown up on his wonderful holiday specials (Great Pumpkin is by far my favorite), I had high hopes for a new Peanuts movie, especially since Schulz's son was involved in the production. Sadly, I was rather disappointed by the end product. While the voice casting was reasonably good, the story felt shallow and undeveloped, and failed to bring anything new—or even engaging—to the table. Meanwhile, the animation style, while certainly different, was a strange hybrid of 2D and 3D. Personally, I think it would have been more satisfying had it been rendered as traditional 2D. That it was Blue Sky's highest-rated film stands as proof that I'm an outlier—no surprise here.
