Moon

2009, Liberty Films et al

This virtual one-man show is a tour de force for Sam Rockwell as the sole human inhabitant of a mining industry on the Moon. It's a resounding success for writer/director Nathan Parker, as well as an elegant example of economical filmmaking, where intelligence and creativity trump big budgets big time—amazing to think it was only $5 million, especially given the very fine visual effects. That its depiction of life on the Moon is entirely plausible only heightens one's appreciation of this indie gem. And the score—I play it often, and the track "Memories" moves me to tears.
