Metropolis

1927, Erich Pommer

Fritz Lang's silent masterwork enjoyed a nearly-complete restoration on its eightieth anniversary, bringing it back to 95% of its 153 minutes. The significant changes in filmmaking, as well as audience tastes, since its release do not diminish the salient qualities of Metropolis that have so influenced the industry. It's well worth taking the time to study Lang's effort in the context of a "modern" audience, if only to see just how "modern" he really was.
