The Lord of the Rings

1978, Fantasy Films

Long before Peter Jackson turned Tolkien's epic fantasy into an epic blockbuster, Ralph Bakshi took a crack at it. The results were certainly flawed but nevertheless deserving of respect. Bakshi relied on rotoscoping to achieve realistic movement, and this helped give the film a more "adult" look. For the most part, this worked—it was hardly a "cartoon" in the classic sense. For all of its many faults, it's still worth the time to watch, if only to expand one's awareness of and appreciation for animation.
