What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

2018, 455 Films

It doesn't matter whether you like the show or not (I was in the 'not' camp); this is an engrossing, entertaining, and even at times heartbreaking look at the making of a polarizing television series from the perspective of the actors, writers, directors, producers, and fans.

Co-written and co-directed by Ira Steven Behr, the series' showrunner, it features a staggering number of the cast and crew sharing their experiences, and the two hour run time gives them room to delve pretty deeply into what made the show work—or not. Although at times it's a bit heavy-handed (and Behr's bright blue beard can be quite a distraction), overall it stands head and shoulders above any other doc on Trek, and trust me, I've seen quite a few of them. In fact, this is an outstanding documentary of any kind, and so compelling that it's forced me to step back and rethink my opinion of the show; I may someday rewrite my review.
