The Incredibles

2004, Pixar

Given how audiences have been loudly clamoring for a sequel for over a decade, it's clear The Incredibles was a massive hit for Pixar; indeed, it generated over 600% profit. The success is down to their simple formula: start with a strong story, create interesting characters, and bring them to life with skillful animation. For me, the film's greatest strength lies in how it expertly blends spy thriller and superhero genres, the result being in many ways better than any Bond or Superman film, live action or otherwise. This was especially notable for me as I'm not much into 007 or superheroes. As icing on the cake, Jack-Jack Attack is one of the funniest shorts I've seen—I mean, it's rare for me to laugh out loud, and I was howling. Needless to say, Incredibles remains solidly in my Top Ten.

The Incredibles 2

2018, Pixar/Walt Disney

So, first, let's get the incredible statistics out of the way. Its $1.243 billion in ticket sales made it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2018, the fourth-highest-grossing animated film, and the 18th-highest-grossing film of all time, as well as being the third Pixar film to gross $1 billion. As for the film itself, all I can say is it was really, really hard for me to knock it down a teeny bit, as it just didn't have quite the surprising emotional depth as the first one, but it came close enough to feel it was still worth the looong wait.
